Hi everyone! As it is Friday today, we thought we would post a review of the week, in particular on Literacy.
This week we have been enjoying listening to our Guest Readers after snack or lunch each day. Reading aloud to someone is very important for reading, but reading to the whole class is a step above that! It can be a little nerve-wracking so we make sure we are respectful and attentive listeners because we know how it feels. As the reader, when read you aloud you realise how important it is to use great expression and read fluently, and the importance of showing confidence even when you don’t feel that way.

After reading we share three things the reader did well during their book. Some examples of the positives are:
“You read with great expression and excitement in your voice”
“You read the punctuation really well which added to the excitement in the story”
“You sounded like you practiced a lot at home because you seemed very confident”

Today we got a lovely surprise when we discovered that Miss Sharp had left her cat, Lola, in charge of reading our narrative writing about becoming scientists. Lola even sent us a video to tell us how pleased she and Miss Sharp were that we used lots of powerful writing strategies like onomatopoeia, alliteration, hyperbole and the power of three. They also really liked that we were able to write exciting narratives with sizzling starts, a clear happening or event in the middle followed by the resolution, and a conclusion at the end.

This afternoon, we were exploring physical science. We completed an experiment (found on Science Bob’s website) which involved a can, a blown up balloon, some crazy hair and static electricity. It was quite a simple experiment, but it was really fun!
Here’s how to do it:
1. Get your materials together and ready to start.
2. Place the can on it’s side, on a smooth flat surface like a table.
3. Rub the balloon back and forth through your hair really fast. Teachers with crazy hair work best!
4. Now the fun part – hold the balloon close to the can without actually touching it. The can will start to roll towards the balloon without you even touching it! Try going both ways.
Things we discovered:
It doesn’t matter if the person holding the balloon is the person who rubs it on their hair or not.
It works better with long hair.
The can won’t move if it is not on it’s side.
Miss Sharp has crazy and highly entertaining hair.
If you rip up a tissue into pieces, the balloon can pick the pieces up and make them join onto each other.
What would we rate this out of ten? A definite TEN!

Our class managed to total 325 walks to and from school! That’s awesome! We must have lots of happy and healthy people in Room 24. 🙂
The teachers at Killara loved walking from the red post box so much, we have decided to do it every Friday for the rest of term! Feel free to meet us there at 8.30 on Friday mornings.
This week, we have been thinking about Data and Graphing in Numeracy. We have been posing questions, collecting results, displaying results and analysing our findings.

This term we have been exploring some of the You Can Do It values.
This week we are focusing on honesty. It is always very important to do the right thing and tell the truth.
This is something we should keep in mind throughout our school day.
“It is important not to lie to your friends and say you can do something when you can’t.” – Lucas
“It is important not to lie and say you are feeling sick just because you don’t want to go somewhere or do something.” – Callum
“It is important not to lie about food, just because your friends like something doesn’t mean you have to as well.” – Rory
“It is okay to be honest and admit you don’t know how to do something.” – Brock
“You can tell your friends to be honest and not lie to a grown up”. – Noah
“It is okay to be honest and tell your friends that you don’t want to be involved if they make a choice to do the wrong thing.”
Some other values we have looked at so far this Term have been Caring, Doing your best, Freedom and Giving others a Fair Go.
We try to remember the ways we can show each value every day at our school, and remember our motto: Our Best, Every Lesson, Every Day. We look forward to exploring the other values of our You Can Do It program. 🙂
We are thoroughly enjoying our inquiry into science this term. Our experiments are well underway and we have been becoming very familiar with the vocabulary associated with conducting experiments and attempting to explain the science behind each of our experiments.
Some have been more successful than others, but these are all part of our lessons learned and give us opportunities to redo experiments with some hindsight.

The Grade 1/2s loved launching our inquiry with a blast last week! We all went outside to the hill and watched as Ms Hodson and Rebecca demonstrated a water bottle rocket experiment. We were amazed as the bottle shot up into the sky! Here is a version of the experiment, which you could even try at home!

I hope you have all had a happy, safe and relaxing holiday. It is difficult to believe that two weeks have passed already! As nice as holidays are, I am looking forward to getting back to school and back into our normal routine again. Most of all, I am looking forward to seeing everyone’s smiling faces in the morning!
I am looking forward to hearing all about your holiday adventures. Term 4 will be busy as usual, but is always a great, fun term especially with the beautiful weather making more regular appearances! (Please don’t forget your hats!)
